Epidemiological profile and temporal trend of mortality from self-inflicted injuries among adolescents and young people in Brazil, 2013-2022

Objective: to analyze the temporal trend in suicide rates in Brazil from 2013 to 2022. Methods: Ecological time series study with data on mortality from self-harm in Brazil. Suicide rates per 100 thousand inhabitants were calculated, according to sociodemographic characteristics. The temporal trend was estimated using Prais-Winsten regression. Results: In Brazil, from 2013 to 2022, 23,222 deaths from self-inflicted injuries were recorded. The mortality rate in Brazil among young adults was higher compared to other age groups, with 7.50 deaths for every 100 thousand young people. Soon after, adolescents have a mortality rate of 5.28 deaths/100,000 adolescents, while mortality among those aged 10 to 14 is 1.07/100,000. It was observed that hanging, strangulation or suffocation represented more than 74% of total deaths, followed by firearm deaths with 4.26 and precipitation from a high place with 3.95% of deaths. In the temporal analysis, it was observed that in all age groups and regions of the country there was a tendency for the mortality rate to increase. It is worth highlighting the North regions with an increase of 8.72% per year in deaths among young adolescents, the Southeast with an increase of 9.55% per year among adolescents and the South with an 8.75% increase among young adults. Conclusion: High suicide rates were identified in the midwest, especially among young adults. The temporal trend was growth in all macro-regions and in all age groups analyzed.
