Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is among the most prevalent neoplasms and remains one of the primary public health challenges, representing a significant hurdle for healthcare systems and the quality of life of affected women. General objective: To identify, through scientific production, the challenges encountered by mastectomized women in breastfeeding. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review understood as a descriptive exploratory study. Results: It was found that the challenges faced by women in breastfeeding after mastectomy are influenced by various factors, such as lack of medical support, concerns about physical appearance, and functional limitations resulting from surgery. The results also highlighted the significant role of nurses in providing guidance and emotional support to these vulnerable women. Discussion: Overall, the presented research addresses different aspects related to women's health, especially concerning breastfeeding and post-mastectomy care, providing pertinent information about the experiences, challenges, and specific needs faced by women who have undergone mastectomy and breast cancer treatment. It was observed that the challenges faced by women in breastfeeding after mastectomy are influenced by various factors, such as lack of medical support, concerns about physical appearance, and functional limitations resulting from surgery. Conclusion: Therefore, breastfeeding in mastectomized women may be compromised by reduced milk production in the breast, as well as the need to adapt to alternative breastfeeding techniques. The role of nurses is fundamental in providing appropriate support, education, and guidance to mastectomized women.
