Elbow injuries in sports - a literature review

Introduction: some types of osteoarticular injuries have a high incidence in certain sports. It can be seen that, among these injuries, the ones that involve the elbow articulation stands out. Objective: this literature review aims to analyze the main pathological, clinical and surgical changes in injuries to the elbow joint resulting from sports. Treatments prospects and risk factors will be contemplated too. Methodology: it is an integrative literature review, which used “PubMed” and “ScienceDirect” as databases. The boolean operators used were “Elbow Injuries” and “Sports”. As an exclusion classification filter, the present work excluded articles that were published more than 5 years ago. Results and Discussion: the theoretical framework consists in 27 articles. The practice of throwing sports is directly related to cases of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries. One of the most common golf related injuries is “medial epicondylitis” or “golfer’s elbow”. “Lateral epicondylitis” is common in racket sports. Traumatic injuries occur very often in combat sports. Volleyball players are more exposed to chondral injuries. The ulnar nerve is a structure that is constantly suffering injuries in elbow articulation in weightlifters. Final considerations: among the main sports related to elbow injuries, field and bat sports, such as baseball, stood out. Racket sports (such as squash), combat sports (such as Jiu-Jitsu), invasion sports (such as football), and brand sports (such as cricket) are well-known for elbow injuries too. The main injuries are remodeling of the medial epicondyle, injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament, the so-called “tennis elbow”, vascular hyperplasia, collagen disorganization and medial apophysitis in the ulnar nerve.
