Otitis is an inflammation of the ear canal in mammals, manifesting acutely or chronically. Factors influencing its onset include improper cleaning, immunosuppression, and climate. Depending on the affected ear region, it is classified as external, middle, or internal. The most commonly affected species are dogs and cats. Otitis is caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and allergies. Bacterial otitis is the most common and its treatment involves the use of antibiotics in various pharmaceutical forms, such as solutions and suspensions. The continuous and improper use of these medications can cause bacterial resistance, leading to a constant search for innovative drugs. This work is a bibliographic review of articles published between 2013 and 2024 focusing on new nanotechnology-based drugs for otitis in pre-clinical studies. Significant advances have been made during this decade, and examples of new technologies include nanofibers, nanoelastic vesicles, and nanoemulsions, which offer better drug delivery and stability. The prospects are that new generations of otitis drugs will utilize nanotechnology.
