The physiotherapeutic approach in paediatric palliative care

Objective: To summarize the literature on the performance of physical therapy in palliative care in pediatrics, identifying the state of the art on the subject and knowing the gaps about it. Method: this is a narrative review of the literature through a search for articles and documents on the Electronic Journals Portal available, with a descriptive analysis being performed. Results: A total of 60 publications were found, and 16 articles were included in this study for analysis that showed certain limitations regarding research on PPC, the inclusion of physical therapists in PPC teams, protocols used by physical therapy in PPC, and the inclusion of physical therapy in PPC decision-making. Conclusion: The role of the physical therapist in pediatric palliative care is essential and complementary to increase the quality of life of the child, especially acting in the improvement and maintenance of physical, motor, cognitive, psychological and social aspects. Palliative care should not only relieve symptoms, but also prevent or minimize the worsening of the condition. This field still needs greater investment, especially with regard to research, the multidisciplinary composition of teams and the specialized training of professionals, aiming at the integral support of children and their families.
