Abstract

The essential oil of Lavandula dentata L., popularly known as lavender, is widely used for medicinal purposes due to its chemical composition rich in monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and phenylpropanoids. The combination of commercial antifungals with lavender essential oil in the treatment of candidiasis represents a promising therapeutic strategy. This approach can increase the effectiveness of traditional treatments by taking advantage of the natural properties of the essential oil, offering a more effective alternative to combat candidiasis, a common fungal infection caused by yeasts of the genus Candida spp. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal potential of L. dentata L. essential oil and the antifungals Nystatin and Fluconazole, as well as the synergistic effect of these antifungals with the essential oil against the yeasts Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis. The methodology used to evaluate antifungal activity was disk diffusion. The tests were carried out in triplicate, and the results were measured by the values of the inhibition halos around the discs. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the essential oil was also evaluated. The results showed that the yeasts tested were resistant to fluconazole. However, with the addition of L. dentata L. essential oil, the yeast C. albicans showed an inhibition halo of 26.3 mm, indicating sensitivity. The yeast C. tropicalis also showed resistance to fluconazole, but with the synergistic effect of lavender essential oil it presented an inhibition halo of 17.8 mm, classified as intermediate. These results highlight the potential of lavender essential oil as an effective natural alternative for treating infections caused by these yeasts.
