Experiences and challenges of humanized childbirth: perceptions of parturients and healthcare professionals

Abstract

Humanized childbirth involves assisting women through all stages of childbirth, focusing on the procedure's execution. The wishes and characteristics of pregnant women should be considered, making them the protagonists with the chance to choose and guide this moment, which belongs solely to them and their families. This study aims to identify the perceptions and experiences of parturients and healthcare professionals regarding humanized childbirth in national and international literature. This is an integrative literature review conducted from February to June 2023. Data collection was carried out through a search for scientific articles published in the last five years in the Virtual Health Library (VHL-BIREME) and the Scientific Library On Line (SCIELO) portal. Five studies related to this topic were found, categorizing experiences, expectations, realities, and perceptions of parturients about humanized childbirth. It is highlighted that there are still challenges to be overcome in the implementation of humanized childbirth, such as the lack of family support, the lack of trained professionals, and the influence of practices involving medication. Therefore, it is suggested that studies provide support for the development of effective strategies for the implementation and strengthening of humanization in childbirth, contributing to more respectful, safe, and satisfying care for parturients.
