Introduction: Technological innovation in communication has advanced in recent years and has encompassed the health area. Telephone interview facilitates interpersonal communication without the presence of the interviewer and interviewee. Remote interviews carried out by telephone or email are a technological tool for scientific research. Objective: to report the experience of conducting research with data collection via telephone, carried out to verify the reason for patients' absence from medical appointments scheduled at a reference outpatient clinic. Method: experience report, carried out in the interior of the state of São Paulo, with data from January to December 2018, from a database of 22,550 patients who missed medical appointments. Made 2014 telephone calls using a mobile phone to 493 randomly selected patients, 317 of which were included in the sample. Results: Of the 493 patients, 151 patients were unable to conduct an interview, 12 refused to participate and 13 died. The average call time was 17 minutes, 50.79% were made in the morning and contact was established with the patient in 94.32% of cases. Conclusion: There is evidence that this method is applicable in research and management and has advantages in reaching a large number of patients, low cost, reduced collection time, as well as flexibility for researchers and interviewed.
