Introduction: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, known as HIV, is the causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition that compromises the immune system, especially CD4+ T cells. The virus modifies the DNA of cells, promoting its replication. Objective: to carry out an analysis of the existing literature, aiming to map information about the benefits of using zidovudine as a method to inhibit viral load in pregnant women with HIV. Methodology: employs the scoping review protocol according to the guidelines outlined in the Joanna Briggs Institute evidence syntheses manual (2020), which incorporates the following steps: formulation of the research question, identification of relevant studies, selection of studies to be included, extraction of relevant data, consolidation, synthesis and presentation of results. Results and discussion: it showed that the use of zidovudine in the treatment of HIV infection in pregnant women was worrying due to the various toxic effects presented, such as mitochondrial dysfunction, bone marrow suppression and cardiac toxicity. Conclusion: Based on the studies analyzed, zidovudine demonstrated to be an effective tool when used in combination with other antiretroviral agents to reduce the HIV viral load in pregnant women, significantly contributing to the prevention of vertical transmission of the virus to newborns.
