Analysis of the Anthropometric Profile of Chronic Renal Patients on Hemodialysis in Relation to Treatment Time

Introduction: Patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis (HD) are at high risk for mortality, and protein-energy malnutrition stands out as one of the most common causes of this condition. Objective: To evaluate the association between the duration of hemodialysis and anthropometric parameters of patients. Methods: It is a cross-sectional study with secondary data, developed at the hemodialysis clinic of Foz do Iguaçu-Nefroclínica. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (No. 3.100.629 on 12/21/2018), a total of 41 patients. Data were collected through electronic medical records, which were analyzed for biochemical and anthropometric markers, two groups were considered: time on HD less than or equal to five years, time on HD greater than or equal to five years. Results: The results of this study show a reduction in anthropometric measures as a result of the length of treatment, although when analyzing the formulas for the proportion of lean and fat mass there was no significance in these parameters. Conclusion: Patients undergoing dialysis treatment for a long period are classified as a risk group for protein-energy malnutrition. Pointing out that the group with more than 5 years of HD treatment showed a worsening in their nutritional status.
