Health services for trans bodies: an integrative review

Introduction: The trans community, in the search for visibility and rights, has been gaining ground over the years, however, they are exposed to alarming rates of prejudice in accessing health services in order to affirm their gender. Objective: This study aimed to understand the challenges faced by trans people in the search for adequate health services for the gender transition process. Methodology: This is an integrative review of specialized literature of a qualitative nature based on the following guiding question: “What challenges are faced by the trans population who seek health services for gender transition?”. PubMed databases from the National Library of Medicine, BIREME and SciELO were consulted and studies available in their entirety published in the years 2018 to 2023, in Portuguese, Spanish and English, were used. Results and discussion: Ten studies were included in this review and these showed that in the search for health services for the gender transition process, the main barriers faced by the trans public are the lack of services and professionals specialized in trans health, prejudices in care of health, omission of rights, lack of knowledge and unpreparedness of professionals regarding the health demands of trans people, in addition to causing this population to evade the health system. Conclusion: it is clear that there are still few services that provide qualified care for trans people who wish to begin their gender transition and the transsexualization process does not provide a sufficient response to the care of this population.
