Objective: To discuss the role of music therapy in adult patients in the intensive care unit as a tool for its incorporation into the care plan given the promising potential for clinical improvement in patients. Method: This is an integrative, descriptive, exploratory literature review, with a qualitative approach carried out in the databases Virtual Health Library (BVS), Scopus, Cochrane Library, National Library of Medicine (PubMed/MEDLINE), Embase and Proquest Digital Dissertations. Results: The acceptance of music therapy in Intensive Care Units and its use as a complementary method has led to positive responses, such as changes in blood pressure, respiratory rate, reduced pain, less need for sedatives, reduced anxiety, and emotional responses, such as increased comfort, joy and peace. Conclusion: The benefits of music therapy demonstrate its potential use as a complementary method and the need for more research in other countries, such as those in South America. Its use also denotes the possibility of developing public policies in order to expand its use.
