Abstract

Introduction: Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease that is challenging to diagnose and affects approximately 10% of women during their premenstrual period, causing considerable harm to the health and psychosocial functioning of its patients. Objective: To understand the profile, incidence, and trends of hospitalizations due to endometriosis in Brazil over the last five years. Methodology: An ecological, cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach was conducted using data available from DataSUS and IBGE to calculate incidence rates and establish the profile of hospitalizations due to endometriosis in the Brazilian female population. In the statistical analysis, the mean, standard deviation, and percentage variation of the different variables extracted from the databases were calculated. In addition, Poisson regression models were adjusted to analyze the temporal trend of hospitalization rates. Results: The incidence of hospitalizations due to endometriosis increased exponentially in Brazil and in all its macroregions, reflecting greater detection and treatment. The North and Northeast regions had the lowest average rates, while the South and Southeast had the highest. The average length of hospital stays decreased, but the cost per hospitalization increased. The highest incidence was observed among brown women aged 30 to 49 years, with a significant increase in hospitalizations of patients over 60 years old, in addition to black and indigenous women. Conclusion: Endometriosis represents a growing and challenging demand for the public health network in Brazil.
