Child maltreatment represents a serious public health issue with significant impacts on mental health and the neurobiological development of affected individuals. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the impacts of childhood maltreatment on the development of mental disorders in adulthood, with a focus on depressive and personality disorders. This is an integrative literature review conducted in six stages. Data were collected from the BVS and PubMed platforms based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in a final sample of 12 articles. The findings revealed structural changes in brain regions such as the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex, as well as epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation, which influence stress responses and increase vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, the results indicate that individuals exposed to early abuse present greater resistance to treatment and higher recurrence of depressive episodes. It is hoped that this study will contribute to expanding awareness of the impacts of childhood maltreatment, reinforcing the importance of early interventions and public policies aimed at the protection and monitoring of victims, in order to minimize long-term mental health consequences.
