The experience of a woman’s partner with breast cancer

Introduction: Considering the great social and emotional impact that the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer has on the lives of women and their partners, it is necessary to analyze how partners feel when faced with their wife's diagnosis of breast cancer. Objective: to understand the experience of the partner of a woman with breast cancer, in the period that covers diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Method: 15 companions of women diagnosed with breast cancer, users of the reference hospital in João Pessoa-PB, were interviewed and the content analysis proposed by Bardin was used as a methodological reference. Results: three categories were identified: Feelings experienced upon receiving the diagnosis of the disease; Social support received in the natural process of the disease; Changes in the marital relationship. The companions reported that they feared losing their companions when they witnessed their suffering in the face of the diagnosis, but they hid their feelings as a way of strengthening both of them. Conclusion: marital support for coping with the disease served as a foundation in the complex process involving the disease.
