Epidemiological characterization of mortality from heart failure in the state of Piauí, Brazil, 2013-2023

Introduction: Heart failure (HF) is a clinical condition characterized by symptoms such as shortness of breath, ankle swelling, and fatigue, caused by structural and/or functional heart abnormalities. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the epidemiological characterization of HF mortality in the state of Piauí between 2013 and 2023. Methods: This is an epidemiological study with data collected from Death Certificates registered in SIM/DATASUS. Descriptive data analysis was performed using absolute and relative frequencies, organized in tables. Results: During the studied period, 4,789 deaths due to HF were recorded in the state. Most of the victims were male (52.99%), mixed-race (67.94%), aged 80 and over (49.29%), illiterate (53.42%), and married (42.52%). Additionally, more than half of the deaths occurred in a hospital setting (66.74%). Conclusion: These results indicate the need for the implementation of early preventive strategies, risk factor diagnosis, strengthening access to proper treatment, and promoting healthy habits to improve quality of life and significantly reduce HF mortality in the state of Piauí.
