Role of the community health agent in monitoring individuals with arterial hypertension: a scoping review

The Community Health Agent (CHA) performs an important role in the Family Health Strategy (FHS) and actively participates in health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH). Thus, a scoping review was carried out in January and February 2024, whose objective was to map scientific evidence on the performance of the CHA inserted in the FHS for the follow-up of people with SAH. This is a Scoping Review (ScR), according to the steps proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewer's Manual. The protocol of this study was published in the Open Science Framework: DOI 10.17605/OSF. E/TFQNZ. The evidence was interpreted and related according to the Action Axes of the Cardiovascular Health Strategy in Primary Health Care. In the context of cardiovascular health, health education emerges as a crucial aspect, due to its importance in modifying lifestyle for the control and prevention of SAH. In the care axis, it includes the measurement of blood pressure at home by the CHA, a standardized practice, but associated with work overload and professional mischaracterization. Guidance on behavioral changes, effective communication, and counseling on healthy lifestyle, both for hypertensive and normotensive patients, in addition to home visits and active search for SAH patients for regular consultations were evidenced. The role of CHWs in the promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases is also highlighted, including the promotion of physical activity during home visits, with an impact on lifestyle changes in adults with risk factors. The importance of the participation of CHWs in blood pressure control and cardiovascular health promotion is recognized, emphasizing the need for continuous training and precise definition of their attributions within the Family Health team
