Perception and prevalence of electronic cigarette use by students at the State University of Tocantins

Abstract

Introduction: Smoking is a global epidemic and causes millions of preventable deaths. Although campaigns have reduced the consumption of traditional cigarettes, the use of electronic cigarettes (ECs) is growing among young people, especially college students, attracted by their modern appearance and varied flavors. This study investigates the use and perception of ECs among students at Unitins – Augustinópolis Campus. Methodology: This is an exploratory, quantitative and qualitative study, with a quantitative and qualitative approach, administered via an online questionnaire to students in Accounting, Law, Nursing and Medicine. The estimated sample size was 100 participants. The analysis used Excel. Results: 81 students participated. Most were female, young, medical students, unemployed, and with a family income above three minimum wages. Approximately 26% reported EC use, mainly at parties. Use was associated with social influence, alcohol, and a sense of relaxation. Most recognize the health risks but consider ECs more socially acceptable than traditional cigarettes. Final Considerations: EC use among university students represents an emerging risk. Research has shown that men are more likely to use EC, and that this use is strongly linked to alcohol consumption and partying. Even with access to information, many underestimate the potential harms. Stronger educational and regulatory measures are needed to curb this growth.
