Self-medication in old age: risks and the importance of nursing in care

This study, titled "Self-Medication in the Elderly: Risks and the Importance of Nursing Care," aims to analyze the risks associated with the indiscriminate use of medications among the elderly and reflect on the role of nursing in promoting safe medication practices. The research was conducted through an integrative literature review, gathering articles published between 2013 and 2025 in relevant databases, using the descriptors "self-medication", "elderly" and "nursing". Data analysis revealed that factors such as lack of medical guidance, easy access to medications, and a lack of information are determinants for self-medication, which can cause serious health damages, such as drug interactions and complications from pre-existing diseases. In conclusion, the study highlights the urgent need for educational and preventive actions by the nursing team, aiming to raise awareness among the elderly about rational use of medications and reduce health risks for this population.
