Integrative and complementary practices in the prevention and treatment of diabetic foot ulcers

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Integrative and Complementary Health Practices (ICHP) in the prevention and treatment of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), focusing on wound healing, reduction of complications, and improvement of quality of life. Methods: Qualitative integrative review, with searches conducted in PubMed, SciELO, VHL, and VHL-MTCI databases over the past 10 years, using the descriptors "diabetic foot," "complementary therapies," and related terms. Eight studies were included after screening for eligibility criteria (Portuguese/English languages, open access, clinical approach to ICHP). Results: It was identified that: laser therapy and LED phototherapy accelerate healing; herbal medicines (Calendula, Copaiba) have anti-inflammatory effects; sea salt spray showed antimicrobial action; and skin thermometry helps in prevention. These therapies demonstrated effectiveness, low cost, and lower risk of adverse effects compared to conventional treatment. However, implementation faces challenges such as lack of standardization and trained professionals. Conclusion: ICHP represent a promising strategy in DFU management but require standardized protocols, professional training, and public policies for expansion within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Their integration into conventional care may improve clinical outcomes and patients’ quality of life.
