Clinical and epidemiological characterization of deaths from Diabetes Melittus in Brazil from 2014 to 2023

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder resulting from a deficiency in insulin production or action. It is divided into type 1, of autoimmune origin, and type 2, related to genetic factors and lifestyle habits. The objective of this study is to characterize the clinical and epidemiological profile of deaths from Diabetes Mellitus in Brazil between 2014 and 2023. This is a descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional study using secondary data obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS). The variables analyzed included sex, age group, education level, race/color, regions of the country, and ICD-10 classification categories. During the analyzed period, 674,416 deaths from DM were recorded, with a cumulative rate of 32.24 per 100,000 population. The highest mortality rate was observed in the Northeast region, while the lowest occurred in the Central-West region. The death profile showed a predominance of women, elderly individuals aged 80 or older, those with low levels of education, and those of white race/color. The "unspecified diabetes mellitus" category (E14) had the highest number of records, indicating weaknesses in the reporting and classification systems. Therefore, it is concluded that there is a need to improve information systems, strengthen primary care, and implement more effective prevention and control strategies targeted at vulnerable populations.
