The Importance of Humanization Offered to Children by the Nursing Team in Vaccination Rooms

Abstract

Vaccination is sometimes an event marked by fear and insecurity. Because it is of fundamental importance, this action should be carried out in a way that provides the best possible experience for the child and parents/caregivers, seeking to bring comfort and security. The objective of this research was to identify the humanization actions carried out in vaccination rooms. This is a field research study with qualitative analysis. To answer the research objective, two questionnaires were applied (to nursing professionals and to parents/caregivers). The theory used to support the work's proposal and underpin the data was Jean Watson's Transpersonal Caring Theory, which has a close relationship with the National Humanization Policy. The interviews were conducted in the Primary Health Care Units (UBSs), and after data collection and analysis, 3 categories were found: 1st: Fear of the unknown and pain that reflects tension!; 2nd: Welcoming: Does it reflect the child's (and parents'/caregivers') reaction?; 3rd: Humanize: responsible and welcoming protection. It is concluded that humanization is carried out in immunization, however, there is a need for more strategic humanized actions, and for more resources to be made available for this purpose, in addition to valuing and training professionals.
