Nurses’ perceptions of body image alterations in children with sarcoma: challenges for identification and comprehensive care

Sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm originating in mesenchymal tissues, which are responsible for the support and structural framework of the human body. It may affect children and generate significant physical and psychosocial repercussions. Objective: To analyze nurses' perceptions regarding body image changes in children with sarcoma and the challenges related to identification and comprehensive care. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review conducted according to the methodological guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and organized in accordance with PRISMA 2020 recommendations. The search was carried out in the SciELO, PubMed, and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, with complementary use of Google Scholar. Controlled descriptors from DeCS and MeSH were used, combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR: Child, Nurse, Body Image, Soft Tissue Neoplasms, Oncology, and Osteosarcoma. Initially, 273 records were identified; after applying the time filter (2020–2026), 74 studies remained. The advanced search resulted in 45 additional records. After removing duplicates and screening titles and abstracts, 24 studies composed the final sample. Full-text articles published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish addressing nurses’ perceptions, body image changes, or psychosocial impacts in children with cancer were included. Editorials, duplicates, simple abstracts, and exclusively biomedical studies without a care-related interface were excluded. Results: The findings showed that sarcoma treatment, often associated with extensive surgeries, amputations, and chemotherapy, leads to significant bodily changes, impacting children’s self-esteem, identity, and psychosocial development. Nurses play a central role in the early identification of emotional distress, family support, and implementation of interventions that promote humanized and comprehensive care. Conclusion: The need for professional qualification in managing psychosocial dimensions related to body image is reinforced, strengthening evidence-based practices centered on the child and family.
