Abstract

Migraine is one of the most common pain complaints in medical practice and one of the most disabling diseases worldwide. Currently, it is widely treated with NSAIDs and simple analgesics. Cannabis has been used by humanity for thousands of years in the treatment of painful conditions such as migraine, and its active substances, the phytocannabinoids, interact with the endocannabinoid system. This study aims to evaluate the potential benefits of medical cannabis use in the clinical management of patients affected by migraines. It consists of an integrative literature review conducted through searches in the PubMed and Lilacs/VHL databases, including 9 scientific articles published within the last 10 years that address the use of medical cannabis in migraine treatment. Based on the results of this review, it was observed that the use of medical cannabis helps control migraine symptoms. Among the primary benefits are its potential to reduce the frequency and intensity of painful migraine attacks. However, despite the promising results, there is still a scarcity of studies on the use of medical cannabis, requiring more specific studies with greater scientific rigor to validate its efficacy and safety in treating migraines.
