Abstract

This paper consists of a systematic review on the impact of pediatric cancer on family dynamics from the systemic theoretical framework of family approach. A literary review was carried out through the journal portal of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel of the Ministry of Education (CAPES/MEC), using the [1]"advanced search" tool, as well as the search in LILACS, PEPSIC and SCIELO databases. Twenty-four articles were selected for complete reading and, with thematic content analysis, four categories were constructed for family functioning and subsystems: pediatric cancer and family dynamics – coping and function; pediatric cancer and marital subsystem - cohesion, flexibility and communication; pediatric cancer and parental subsystem – being parents all the time; and pediatric cancer and fraternal subsystem - what is the place of the brothers? Greater cohesion, more expressiveness of the limbs and less conflict were identified, opposing greater support within the family. It was observed that the diagnosis of cancer perpetuates perennial changes in family dynamics, despite its effort to maintain a sense of normality. Further research is needed on the relationships of subsystems and "inherited" family patterns for coping and adjustment actions.
