The use of the ulectomy technique as a surgical option in cases of prolonged retention in tooth eruption in pediatric dentistry: A case series

The process of timing tooth eruption is an integral part of childhood growth and development. However, delays in tooth eruption are common in many children, and the dentist and/or pediatric dentist must know how to evaluate each case. One of the reasons related to this delay is gingival fibrosis, which after a clinical evaluation and detailed radiographic examinations of the region, confirming the absence of bone tissue, treatment is chosen using the ulectomy technique, which consists of excision of the tissues that cover the incisal surface of the dental crown of an unerupted tooth, with the aim of allowing a free path for this tooth to occupy its position in the arch. The objective of this work is to report a series of clinical cases that show eruption of elements 11, 12, 21 and 22. The patients described reported complaining of the absence of anterior teeth, which after clinical and radiographic examination, it was observed that this was a case of retention of tooth eruption due to gingival fibrosis. The proposed treatment was ulectomy using the conventional technique, with a scalpel, and the high-power laser technique, aiming to expose the incisal edges of these elements, consequently promoting eruptive movement. It is concluded that, faced with possible cases of delayed tooth eruption, ulectomy proves to be an excellent treatment choice, due to its simple technique, recovery and quick results, aiming to restore functionality, health and aesthetics to patients.
