Abstract

Oral mucositis is the most common adverse effect in the oral cavity, caused by antineoplastic therapies such as chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy of the head and neck. It is characterized by erythematous, ulcerated and whitish lesions that can vary in degree. The aim of this study was to review the literature on oral mucositis caused by antineoplastic treatment, highlighting its clinical aspects, risk factors, pathobiology, assessment scales and which preventive and therapeutic treatments should be performed, with the aim of highlighting how the dentist should act to bring comfort and alleviate the pain caused by the injuries, in addition to guiding the patient with the individual care that is necessary. Treatments aim to mitigate symptoms and prevent using laser, analgesia, mouthwash, alternative therapies with natural agents and cryotherapy. However, regardless of the treatment adopted, the patient must be accompanied by a multidisciplinary team in which the dentist must always be present.
