Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relationship between different types of continuous and intermittent renal replacement therapy and clinical outcomes in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury. Method: An integrative review was conducted using the following databases: Scopus (Elsevier), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline®/PubMed®), and Science Direct. The search focused on articles published between 2017 and 2023. The review was conducted between April and June 2023, adhering to the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. Results: Seven articles were included, with the majority published in 2021, and China being the country with the highest prevalence. Regarding the level of evidence, most articles were classified as 2B. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) was found to be associated with better outcomes in terms of renal function recovery compared to intermittent renal replacement therapy (IRRT). Conclusion: Consistent evidence indicates that CRRT offers significant advantages over IRRT, particularly in terms of improved renal recovery, reduced risk of complications, and lower mortality rates.
