Abstract

The article addresses the side effects of quetiapine in elderly patients, considering the vulnerability of this population to adverse reactions associated with the use of antipsychotics. In order to identify the main side effects of quetiapine and discuss strategies to mitigate them, a descriptive and qualitative bibliographic review of publications on the subject from the last five years was carried out. The research showed that although quetiapine is effective in treating psychotic and behavioral symptoms in the elderly, it has significant side effects, such as excessive sedation, which increases the risk of falls and fractures, weight gain, metabolic changes and orthostatic hypotension, as well as cognitive impairment. Drug interaction was another risk factor identified, especially considering the prevalence of polypharmacy among the elderly. It was concluded that the use of quetiapine in this age group requires close monitoring and an individualized therapeutic approach in order to minimize risks and optimize patients' quality of life. Careful dose adjustment and periodic assessment of health parameters are also recommended.
