Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive and chronic neurological disease of the central nervous system, characterized by demyelination, axonal damage, and inflammation. Recently, a cell therapy treatment proposal has emerged through autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the use of hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and to identify the short- and long-term benefits of the treatment, as well as the patients' quality of life. Twenty articles were analyzed, selected from searches in the databases (Virtual Health Library, Google Scholar, PubMed, SciELO, and EbscoHost). The results revealed various benefits of cell therapy, including improved quality of life, immunological benefits, and myelin regeneration, especially in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), as well as potential adverse effects. AHSCT promotes autoimmune suppression and immunological restoration, while MSCs have regenerative and neuroprotective actions. It is concluded that cell therapy shows promise for the future due to its benefits, although further studies are needed to expand its clinical application.
