Silicone breast implants, created in the 1960s, have evolved in safety and quality, and are widely used for aesthetic and restorative purposes. Initially used to restore traumas, such as those from the First World War, they have come to be associated with femininity and self-esteem, influenced by factors such as age, genetics, pregnancy and aesthetic standards. Despite the psychological benefits, recent studies point to risks and complications, such as capsular contracture, ruptures and ASIA Syndrome, which links silicone to autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Explants have shown improvement in symptoms and quality of life for patients facing problems with implants. This study reviewed 20 recent articles to evaluate the impacts of implants on health and well-being, evidencing physical, psychological and immunological effects, in addition to highlighting the importance of safe surgical techniques and early diagnosis, such as magnetic resonance imaging. Some studies associate silicone with autoimmune diseases, while others point to the need for national registries to monitor and regulate the use of prostheses. Even with technological advances, complications persist and the increasing rate of explants reflects a change in perception about prolonged use. It is concluded that, despite the aesthetic and psychological benefits, it is essential to inform patients about the risks and ensure continuous monitoring, in addition to investing in research, technology and more rigorous protocols to increase safety and reduce complications.
