Temporal pattern of suicides in Brazil according to sex and age group in the last 10 years

Objective: to evaluate the temporal trend in suicide mortality in Brazil according to young people, adults and elderly people in the period from 2012 to 2021. Methods: Ecological study with data on suicide in Brazil, regions and states. Data were collected from the mortality information system, stratified by sex and age group. Suicide rates were calculated and used to estimate trends using the JoinPoint method. Results: Over the 10 years analyzed, Brazil presented more than 120 thousand deaths by suicide, representing an approximate average of 6 deaths for every 100 thousand inhabitants per year. Sociodemographic characteristics indicate a predominance of deaths in men, with more than 78% of deaths and a coefficient of approximately 10 deaths per 100 thousand. Among the age groups, adults stand out with more than 74% of the country's total occurrences, however, suicide rates are slightly higher among the elderly. In Brazil, the growth variation in young people stands out with 8.3% (95%CI: 6.6; 9.9) per year for females, and 6.1% (95%CI: 4.9; 7. 4) for the male. In the elderly, the trend was stationary for females and an increase of 1.8% (95%CI: 1.1; 2.6) for males. Conclusion: High suicide rates were evidenced. Elderly people showed the highest coefficients, as did males. Overall, the trend in Brazil is growth.
