Abstract

This review aims to analyze and synthesize the scientific evidence regarding the efficacy, treatment protocols, ideal dosages, and potential side effects of photobiomodulation in the prevention and management of radiodermatitis in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy. The research was conducted using the PubMed database, employing the descriptors “photobiomodulation,” “radiodermatitis,” and “neck cancer,” along with the boolean operator “and” to broaden the results. Only clinical and observational studies in humans that addressed photobiomodulation as an intervention for radiodermatitis, written in English and Portuguese, published up to August 2024, were selected. The initial search yielded 12 studies, of which only seven were considered eligible after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. All selected studies were in English and published between 2019 and 2023, indicating a growing interest in the topic. The review suggests that Photobiomodulation is a safe and potentially effective therapeutic resource for the prevention and treatment of radiotherapy-induced radiodermatitis in patients with head and neck cancer.
