Parental knowledge about sudden infant death syndrome: an integrative review

Despite advances in pediatrics and neonatology, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remains among the leading causes of mortality in children under one year of age. This condition is characterized by the sudden and unexpected death of apparently healthy infants, commonly occurring during sleep, and has a significant impact on both families and healthcare professionals. Given its silent and highly devastating nature, it is essential to assess parental knowledge regarding preventive measures associated with SIDS, which can significantly reduce the risk of occurrence. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, parents’ knowledge about SIDS and the most widely disseminated preventive strategies. Identifying gaps in this knowledge may support educational initiatives and health promotion strategies aimed at reducing infant mortality. The relevance of this topic lies in its potential to contribute to the preservation of life through the dissemination of accessible, evidence-based information.
