Use of Potentially Inappropriate Medications in Older Adults in Primary Health Care

Older adults attending Primary Health Care units often use multiple chronic medications, which increases the risk of polypharmacy and adverse drug events. Medications whose risks outweigh their benefits are classified as potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). This pilot study aimed to estimate the frequency of PIM use among older adults assisted at a Primary Health Care Unit in the Federal District, Brazil, and to examine associated factors. This exploratory investigation analyzed sociodemographic variables and medication-.use characteristics. Despite sample limitations related to the requirement for individual consent, the analysis revealed a high prevalence of PIMs, indicating that inappropriate prescribing remains a significant challenge in primary care. These findings underscore the need for structured interventions, such as systematic pharmacotherapeutic review, continuous involvement of clinical pharmacists, and routine use of tools such as the 2023 Beers Criteria, in order to optimize pharmacotherapy and enhance the safety and quality of life of older adults.
