Forensic Nursing in Brazil: a growing field

Objective: To clarify the competencies of forensic nursing, elucidate its benefits, expose the difficulties encountered by it and uncover its importance for the Brazilian health and criminal justice systems. Method: This is an integrative review of the literature, with the aim of deepening the knowledge of materials already prepared by scientific articles and reinforcing the COFEn resolutions, by searching electronic databases such as the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), the US National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LiLACS), with an auxiliary search in the Virtual Health Library (VHL). Results: 9 scientific articles were included in the final sample, and two categories emerged: The integration of forensic nursing into the undergraduate curriculum; Forensic nursing and its subtle border with "conventional nursing". Conclusion: The deficit in undergraduate nursing courses needs to be filled in order for future professionals to be properly trained, since knowledge in this area of health and knowledge in legal areas is necessary, as well as the enactment of laws that legally recognize forensic nursing and its capabilities.
