Nursing care for the elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus: an integrative review

The rapid transformation in the demographic profile of the Brazilian population, coupled with population aging and the increase in non-communicable chronic diseases such as Diabetes mellitus, underscores the need for studies to understand and address these changes. This includes recognizing the role of nursing care within this context. This study aims to analyze nursing care for elderly individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The research adopted an integrative literature review approach, with inclusion criteria for works published in Portuguese between 2010 and 2020, accessed through Scielo, Lilacs, PubMed, using descriptors such as Diabetes mellitus, nursing care, treatment. Five articles were selected, covering various aspects of care for patients with diabetes mellitus. Notable studies include those on disability control in elderly diabetic patients in primary care, intervention projects for patients with decompensated type 2 diabetes mellitus, integrative reviews on research methods in nursing, diabetic foot care, and the nurse's role in promoting health in diabetic foot care in primary care. The research highlights the crucial role of nurses in preventing and caring for patients with diabetes, emphasizing the need for training, a holistic approach, and personalized interventions. Nursing practice should be directed toward improving quality of life, prioritizing the development of self-care and family guidance.
