Elderly people’s perception of the aging process

A person is considered elderly from the age of 60 onward. In Brazil, there are 55.2 elderly individuals aged 65 or older for every 100 children aged 0 to 14. This scenario highlights the later phase of adulthood as a crucial stage of the life cycle, characterized by physical and psychological changes that may intensify the challenges faced by this population. In this context, the self-perception of aging represents a constant challenge, as it involves both individual and collective gains and losses.From this perspective, the aim of this article is to address the perception of elderly individuals regarding the aging process, in order to understand the issues and factors that influence this process and the lived experience of this segment of the population. This is an integrative exploratory literature review that included articles written in English and Portuguese, published between 2020 and 2024, related to the topic, and found in databases such as the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Google Scholar, as well as in the Elderly Care Guide from the Brazilian Ministry of Health (2023) and data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) Census.The study was guided by the question: “What is the perception of elderly individuals regarding the aging process?” The findings indicate that older adults’ self-assessment of aging can vary from positive to negative depending on the context and associated factors. Among the aspects related to a positive evaluation of aging are family and housing conditions, educational attainment, the absence of disabling chronic diseases, and the adoption of a healthier lifestyle. Negative evaluations, on the other hand, are associated with visual and hearing difficulties, obesity, a higher number of pathologies, and lower educational levels.Further research is recommended to deepen the understanding of the interactions among biopsychosocial factors influencing self-perception in old age.
