Abstract

Preoperative fasting, historically adopted to prevent complications related to gastric aspiration, has been reevaluated in light of current scientific evidence. Protocols such as ACERTO and ERAS advocate shortening fasting time and safe intake of clear liquids, associated with reduced complications, hospitalization time, and metabolic discomfort. In burn patients, a condition marked by hypermetabolism and high energy demand, proper fasting management becomes especially relevant given the frequent need for procedures involving the use of anesthetics. The objective of this study was to analyze fasting time and its repercussions in patients admitted to the burn clinic of a public hospital in the Federal District undergoing procedures that require fasting. This is a cross-sectional, quantitative, observational study conducted with 30 adults and elderly individuals. Data collection took place between June and September 2025, with the consent of the participants, and included recording the fasting time for solids and liquids before procedures with anesthetic induction, as well as associated symptoms and food consumption on the same day. All patients underwent nutritional assessment according to institutional protocol. The data were organized in a spreadsheet and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the period of fluid and food deprivation was longer than that recommended by the most current guidelines, which corroborates other studies conducted with the same objective. Finally, it is worth noting the lack of further studies that consider the burn population and the importance of establishing protocols that aim to provide comfort and care to patients by shortening fasting periods.
