Between desire and the law: A Psychoanalytic reading of the Oedipus Complex in The Piano Teacher

This study presents a psychoanalytic analysis of the film The Piano Teacher (2001), aiming to understand how the Oedipus Complex, castration, and the phallus, concepts developed by Freud and expanded by Lacan, are manifested in the character Erika Kohut. The research adopts a qualitative approach based on the interpretative observation of scenes, dialogues, and behaviors of the protagonist, relating them to psychoanalytic theory through bibliographic review. The results indicate that the symbiotic and narcissistic relationship between Erika and her mother, marked by the absence of the paternal function, prevents symbolic separation and sustains a perverse structure characterized by fetishism, voyeurism, exhibitionism, sadism, and masochism. The study also highlights Erika’s refusal of castration and her constant pursuit of the symbolic phallus, represented by love, power, and art, which leads her to a persistent experience of anguish and frustration. It is concluded that the character embodies the conflict between desire and law, revealing, from a psychoanalytic perspective, the impossibility of achieving full jouissance and the permanence of lack as a structural condition of the subject.
